Description

The project ELEMENTS was born as a pioneering approach to understanding and visualizing the complexities of climate transformation. A group of researchers from the Climate and Disaster Risk Reduction Institute at the University of Waterloo, led by Dr. Jose DiBella teamed up with Bepart – The Imagination Movement, a group of Italian tech entrepreneurs active in the public and social space. Through an open call for artists, they selected two artists: myself and Gianluca Abbate, currently based in Rome, Italy. The project was funded by the TRANSFORM international research partnership led by Prof. Sarah Burch, Director. I would like to walk the audience through the creation process of my animations, from the initial kickoff workshop with the project partners through the work completed in my studio. Through the lens of art, ELEMENTS invites us to reflect on the intricate relationships between human agency, environmental change, and social dynamics. Artistic expression can serve as a catalyst for dialogue, enabling communities to engage with the uncertainties of climate change and the complexities of transformation. By visualizing potential futures, artists can provoke critical discussions about the values, priorities, and aspirations that shape community responses to climate challenges. This dialogue is essential for fostering resilience and adaptability, as it encourages communities to consider their agency within a broader ecological and social framework.
