Making Bioplastics with Memories and Feelings

11:15AM to 1:15PM
Duration: 2 hr

Description

This hands-on, interactive workshop offers a multi-sensory and conceptual exploration of biomaterials through the creation of sustainable bioplastics. The primary goal is to guide participants through a simple, replicable method for making bioplastics at home using common household tools such as microwave and kettle, and a variety of organic materials like food colorings, beverages, leaves, coffee, and eggshells, combined with glycerin and gelatin. The session begins with an immersive sensory experience, allowing attendees to smell and touch different materials to ground them in the rich world of organic substances. As participants engage in the hands-on making process, they are encouraged to personalize their creations by embedding edible, handwritten texts and images. A collaborative group discussion will also be facilitated, inviting everyone to share personal memories and experiences associated with the materials, fostering a communal environment that links the physical act of making with individual and collective histories. The workshop will conclude with a brief lecture introducing the wider field of bio-art, covering how biomaterials are used in textiles, wearable art, living sculptures, and how they can be integrated with electronics to create interactive, sound-generating artworks.
