More than Buildings: Experimental Preservation and Traces of the Intangible
Description
For the New Media Caucus Symposium, this presentation interprets this year’s theme of restoration/regeneration through the lens of preservation. More than Buildings explores the conservation of objects and spaces in situ, not as static relics, but as evolving environments shaped by matter, memory, and community. Structured as a community of practice among teachers, students, and local collaborators at the University of Utah and neighboring cities, the project surveys methods and experiments in preserving both tangible and intangible cultural artifacts. It asks how preservation might extend beyond traditional architectural or art-historical frameworks to include the patterns, sounds, and performative traces embedded within sites. Through a series of “sites of inspection,” the presentation examines local archives (defined broadly) and highlights emergent modes of preservation within each. Through photographs, 3D models. clay prints, LIDAR scans, and conceptual mapping, this presentation will invite discussion on how digital media might be a catalyst and a more inclusive method for restoration of the sensory, temporal, and emotional dimensions of a place.
