Postbiotic

Duration: 2 min 43 sec

Description

Postbiotic is an immersive 360 video work that explores speculative ecological futures through the lens of the posthuman. Consisting of footage of the Great Smoky Mountains, AI machine hallucinations, and sculptural shrines constructed from foraged-found materials and digital photogrammetry, Postbiotic explores a future in which humans have reached a singularity with existing flora, fauna, and fungi, integrating human DNA into nonhuman biological frameworks to generate novel ecosystems. Postbiotic imagines a primordial, floating organism positioned within a mountain holler; at once a landscape, animal, and ecosystem. More so, drawing from Eastern philosophies, this organism serves as a shrine to the natural world after humanity. Here, ambivalence plays a significant role: how far into the future does this singularity take shape? What has become of human society? And perhaps most importantly, how do these new living ecosystems work to repair the earth from the open wounds of the Anthropocene and human encroachment?
