Duration: 20 min

Description

Digital and new media art practices are critically dependent on a vast ecosystem of open-source software. However, these tools often face threats from digital obsolescence and lack of maintenance, largely due to contributor burnout and scarce resources. How do we build resilient infrastructures to support the tools essential to our field? This presentation introduces the Clinic for Open Source Arts (COSA) at The Ohio State University, an organization dedicated to the long-term preservation of creative coding tools. COSA addresses this by creating space for an exchange of ideas across projects, and engaging a new generation of supporters in maintaining the digital commons. A key component of COSA's strategy is the Open Source Arts Contributors Conference (OSSAC), a national gathering of artists, developers, and educators. Part development sprint and part “unconference,” OSSAC serves as a vital forum for tackling shared challenges. Over the past two years, these discussions have centered on three critical themes: Access, focusing on making communities more welcoming and broadening the definition of contribution beyond code; Sustainability, addressing contributor burnout and project governance; and Education, exploring best practices for teaching open-source tools effectively. This presentation will detail COSA’s operational model and share key insights from the OSSAC events. Attendees will learn about community-driven strategies for improving documentation and fostering inclusive communities, leaving with scalable models that other institutions can adopt to build capacity for this essential work and ensure a more sustainable future for the new media arts.
