Blue Gall R/Evolution

Duration: 3 min 20 sec

Description

This video is from a scan of Uromycladium tepperianum, a rust fungus that infects more than 100 species of Acacia trees. On some species, the chemicals also cause masses of shoots to grow from the stems, termed witches' brooms. The galls of Uromycladium species that infect wattles (Acacia species) can be called a quintessential Australian plant disease. Some colors here arise from a young eucalyptus tree growing nearby, unaffected. This video presents the galls as sculptural forms with their own evolving equilibrium. Just like the gall becomes enmeshed into the leaves of the tree, forming clumps, some of these sculptures are entwined together at times. Revolving like a dervish, almost meditative, finding their own balance, they evolve into a non-ordinary state, drifting off into space.
