Design a Resilient Future with More-than-human agency

4:30PM to 6:30PM
Duration: 2 hr

Description

Designing More-Than-Human Futures In an increasingly complex and interconnected world, envisioning sustainable and resilient futures requires approaches that move beyond human-centered thinking. As we face urgent challenges such as climate change, technological disruption, and social transformation, designers and thinkers must learn to imagine futures that include the perspectives and needs of other species and ecosystems. This workshop invites participants to explore speculative and foresight design through a more-than-human lens. Each participant will be paired with a nonhuman species—acting as its design partner and advocate—to collaboratively tackle environmental challenges as agents of nature. Through creative and strategic exercises, participants will learn how to anticipate multiple possible futures, develop adaptive design strategies, and have fun designing alongside their chosen creatures. Workshop Structure: Welcome & Introduction: Set the tone for an open and imaginative session, introduce the workshop’s context, and establish a collaborative environment. Scanning & Mapping: Using foresight tools, participants will conduct horizon scanning and mapping to observe their chosen species and identify interconnected environmental, social, and technological factors. Scenario Development: Participants will transform their research insights into plausible and provocative future scenarios, learning key methods of scenario planning and speculative thinking. Storytelling: Finally, participants will bring their future visions to life through storytelling and visualization. Using sketches, props, or generative AI, they will create immersive narratives that communicate their species-centered futures in compelling and accessible ways. By the end of the session, participants will gain hands-on experience in speculative design, foresight mapping, and creative storytelling—skills essential for designing more inclusive, imaginative, and resilient futures.
