Methods and Opportunities in TouchDesigner: Generative Performance Media

9:00AM to 11:00AM
Duration: 2 hr

Description

This beginner-friendly, hands-on workshop uses TouchDesigner to introduce generative performance media. Participants learn core concepts—nodes, wiring, data flow, and real-time interaction—and how to shape sound-reactive visuals for performance and installation. Format: short guided mini-lectures + live demo + step-by-step build. We start with a quick interface tour (Network Editor, Parameters, Viewers, Timeline), then map the workflow: inputs (audio, sensors/video) → processing (TOP/CHOP/SOP/DAT/MAT operators) → outputs (screen/projector). Participants follow along to build an audiovisual network: importing audio, analyzing it in CHOPs, driving image transformations in TOPs, and rendering to output. We’ll touch on Python inside DATs for simple references (e.g., op('…') pathing) and show where computer-vision plug-ins can connect for face/posture/object detection. Goals: Understand TD’s operator families and real-time signal flow. Build a working audiovisual patch that responds to music in real time. Gain confidence navigating the UI and adjusting parameters live. Leave with a template project and slide references for independent study. The session is designed to be interactive throughout; participants see immediate results on screen and can experiment with parameters as we go. No prior TD experience required.
