What the Salt Crystals Knew
Description
In a time when the climate crisis accelerates, the transition to “green energy” already reveals deep failures. One marker is the terraforming of salt flats—often framed as “empty” deserts—into gridded pools for lithium extraction. What the Salt Crystals Knew is a video animation filmed at the Mascasín salt flats in San Juan, Argentina, recently acquired by an international conglomerate for mining. Deserts have long been portrayed as arid and uninhabitable, a narrative used to legitimize extractive projects by authorities seeking so-called empty land to occupy and exploit. The work poetically questions this constructed emptiness and counters colonial narratives that frame these ecosystems as sites of loss rather than living, complex environments.
